In contrast to the Duplicate and Mirror display mode, there is one more option available: Extend Display mode allows you to have a different display on laptop screen and projector screen.
This mode is very useful while giving a presentation to your team because it lets you do activities like replying to mail, opening other files for reference, etc.
Teachers may wish to present a video to the classroom, and while students keep watching, they can use the laptop to do other activities.

Windows 7
First Method – Using Windows Shortcuts
Step 1 – Make sure your laptop and projector are connected with a proper HDMI cable.
Step 2 – On the keyboard of your laptop hold Windows Logo Key and press “P”.
Step 3 – You will see the following options. Choose “Extend” for different displays on the laptop screen and projector screen.
Step 4 – To see the desired program (movie or presentation) on the projector,
> Open the program on the laptop
> Try dragging it out of the display until it appears on the projector screen.
Second Method – Following Standard Steps
Step 1 – If the above method doesn’t work, then go to your desktop homescreen and right-click to see the following options.
Step 2 – Click on “Screen Resolution” to see the following options.
Step 3 – Now navigate to “Multiple displays” and select “Extend these displays” for different displays on the laptop screen and projector screen.
Step 4 – To see the desired program (movie or presentation) on the projector,
> Open the program on the laptop
> Try dragging it out of the display until it appears on the projector screen.
Windows 10

> Try dragging it out of the display until it appears on the projector screen.
Mac OS
Step 1 – Ensure that you have correctly connected the Mac and the projector with an appropriate USB C to HDMI Cable. By default Mac lets you use the different displays on the laptop screen and projector screen.
Step 2 – To see the desired program (movie or presentation) on the projector,
> Open the program on the laptop
> Try dragging it out of the display until it appears on the projector screen.
But if you wish to Mirror or duplicate the Mac Screen onto the projector screen, then follow the steps mentioned below.
Step 1 – Go to the extreme upper right corner of the display on your Mac. Then click on the Apple icon and select “System Preferences…”.
Step 2 – Following window will pop up. You need to click on “Arrangement” to see display mirroring and extending options.
Step 3 – To mirror the display, you need to tick the box as shown in the following image.

For Windows users screen mirroring is automatic once you connect both the devices with the proper HDMI cable. You have to follow a few steps to extend the display.
For Mac users, the case is vice-versa.
